KAMPUNG NELAYAN

KAMPONG FISHERMAN
By: Marshalleh Adaz

Formerly at the summit of Mount Padang there is a place to hang a flag pole balls are colorful. From the way the ball hung to known types of ships that enter and exit through Muaro Padang. And there is a stone near the flag pole basurek, which clearly older than the flag pole itself. It's just that there is no actual reference to the truth and the contents of these basurek stone.

As in painting pictures C.W. AFTER Mieling H.J.J.L. Stuers, Amsterdam 1849-1850, Gunung Padang in describing the shape of a triangle with dipuncaknya flagpole and two adjacent islands (Pulau Pisang and Pulau Pisang Gadang Ketek).
Some ships and fishing boats also decorate the painting. Depiction of conditions in the form of painting in those days was fantastic, although there are some objects that are less precise. For example, two adjacent islands, where the view is now only visible from the beach Manih Aia, then there is a building tucked between Mount Padang to Bukit Gado Gado. But such was the power of a painting. Illustrations are able to bridge the memories and the natural dimensions of the human mind. So be sure the painting was made based on what you've seen and felt painter while in Padang Beach. Maybe when it stood at mid Strandweg painter (Edge of the Sea Road - now Ocean Way).

Almost all the paintings or photographs of Padang for beach before the 19th century shows a boat. For example painting J. Stadler (London, 1811), which described the buffalo and the boat in the driveway of the river (estuary), Padang, or painting of a fishing boat with background house and mountain Padang. Another painting, by P. Lauters (Amterdam, from 1843 to 1845), more dominant with big-screen poster boat that was sailing a small boat and some of them. Some photo collections KITLV Leiden also describes the sea, rivers and boats. The existence of these boats indicates that Muaro Padang is the area of fisheries, trade, government, military and other living communities associated with river and sea. According to historical records, until the late 19th century, Muaro Padang can only be passed by a small boat and was, for the size of a large boat had docked at Banana Island Tower, and followed by a small boat. This is due to shallow and narrow Muaro Padang period. Because of its location near the sea and river flow, among others, Padang known fishing village or kampong Batung. Last term because it's easily found thick lush bamboo.
Its existence as a region likely to start with theory and historical research which states that children from Dara Orange Adityawarman who crowned himself as the first king of Minangkabau (1339). In extending the power and to run his government Adityawarman appointed a viceroy for the Agam, Tanah Datar, Fifty Cities, Kubang Thirteen, Solok, seacoast and the seacoast east coast on the west coast (Padang is in this region). In other literature also mentioned the Portuguese (Thomas Diaz) never get to Padang (1684) after he was stopped in the area Batusangkar. Travel Diaz arrived at Padang through Kamparkanan and Si Balimbing. Only Diaz welcomed the arrival of antipathy by the people of Padang thus forcing Diaz to continue wandering by taking the Minangkabau region boundary mountain ranges with the eastern part of Sumatra Island. In the previous year (1660) also called the port city of Padang and had become the site of a treaty between the Netherlands with the people of Aceh as local authorities are gaining a monopoly over the earth.
It is not easy to know exactly when to start the first time an occupied area. Perhaps the logical interpretation can be obtained separately. If Aditywarman its own expansion to the west coast of Sumatra means there pre-existing population. Likewise, as a fishing village, the utilization of nature because of its geographical conditions have made the sea as the main livelihood of the time, so because of the similarity of the need for life settlements formed, in a larger capacity eventually become the village.

One thing more interesting than the painting, the picture without the outrigger canoe, one pole as the center of the screen buffer and a thatched cottage in the middle. To speed rowed with human power and the screen will be developed if it is located in the middle of the sea. Boats like these can also be called a medium size. While the large size marked Dengah main mast or pole addition, the multilevel structure of the screen, more than four meters wide and more than ten meters long, and are building a large enough middle. While for small boats, also called boat, elongated shape with a width of approximately one meter, more enabled transport people to and from large ships at sea park (near Banana Island Tower). With the condition without outrigger boat or other means of balance is a little contrary to the assumption of the research C. Nooteboom, that until the century millennium (1000 yr) bercadik boat boat has been used mostly in Indonesia and Oceania. Outrigger canoe is a tool balancer of bamboo that is placed along the walls of the boat.
However, after all, boats in the fishing village "Padang" has become a major water transportation, the ancestral symbol without contamination prior to the arrival of foreign nations, and the embryo of the potential for the advancement of civilization in the following years. My ancestors were a sailor ... ...

That is a line of lyric song still ringing ears when we talk about the sea. Dayuang Dayuang ... ..., ... the child dayuang palinggam, is the daily rhythm of fishermen, where the bow of their boats has combined Mount Padang - Batang Arau with settlements along the river - line of sand along a sloping beach of Padang, into a single package that passed down from generation to generation.
